“Cruising with Eloquence: Maintaining Audience Engagement Mid-Flight”
By Ubong Essien, CSP — Dean, School of Eloquence

In one of Monica’s sessions, I used the metaphor of aviation to describe the speaking journey:
- Take-off (Introduction): Grabbing attention
- Cruise Altitude (Body): Sustaining depth
- Landing (Conclusion): Finishing strong
Let’s dwell on cruise altitude — the body of the speech. This is where most of your time in front of the audience is spent. And like a skilled pilot, the speaker must keep the audience stable, engaged, and confidently moving forward.
Eloquence at cruise altitude is about mastery.
You’re no longer proving that you deserve attention — you’re now guiding your audience through the landscape of your ideas.
I told Monica: “Here, your points must flow logically, your transitions must be seamless, and your delivery must be confident.” Every beat, example, and insight must reinforce your message and maintain emotional and intellectual lift.
Many speakers lose power mid-speech because they didn’t structure the body well. Without structure, ideas become turbulence.
To be eloquent at this level:
- Organize your points in a way that builds momentum
- Use supporting stories and analogies
- Vary your voice, gestures, and pacing to keep interest alive
✍🏽 Tip: Think of your audience as passengers — your job is not just to take them somewhere, but to make the journey unforgettable.
This is how you cruise — and how you win — with eloquence.
