“This Person Needs No Introduction” — The Phrase That Exposes Lazy MCs

Let us confront a common habit.
You have heard it.
“Ladies and gentlemen, this person needs no introduction…”
And then the MC proceeds to give a five-minute introduction anyway.
If the person truly needs no introduction, then introduce them properly and move on.
That phrase often reveals one thing:
Lack of preparation.
Why the Phrase Is Problematic
First, it is rarely true.
Someone in the room may not know the speaker.
You cannot assume universal familiarity.
Second, it signals intellectual laziness.
It suggests:
“I did not prepare a structured introduction, so let me fill space with cliché.”
Professional MCs do not rely on clichés.
They rely on clarity.
The Purpose of an Introduction
An introduction has a clear function:
- Establish relevance.
- Establish credibility.
- Connect the speaker to the event.
- Transition control smoothly.
It is not about flattery.
It is not about exaggeration.
It is not about performance.
It is about positioning.
Respect the Audience
When you say “needs no introduction,” you indirectly dismiss the possibility that someone in the audience may need context.
Professional communication respects every listener.
Even if 90 percent know the speaker, the remaining 10 percent deserve clarity.
And clarity requires structure.
How to Do It Properly
Instead of clichés, use precision.
For example:
“Ladies and gentlemen, our next speaker currently serves as…”
Short.
Accurate.
Relevant.
Then invite.
No drama.
No filler.
No unnecessary inflation.
Efficiency reflects competence.
Authority Is Quiet
Over-introducing signals insecurity.
Under-introducing signals carelessness.
The balance lies in:
- Accuracy.
- Relevance.
- Brevity.
That balance is professional maturity.
The Hard Truth
If your introduction relies on recycled phrases, you are not operating at a professional level.
Preparation eliminates cliché.
Structure eliminates awkwardness.
And discipline eliminates embarrassment.
Inside the School of Eloquence Master of Ceremonies training, we teach MCs to eliminate lazy language.
Because language reveals thinking.
And thinking reveals professionalism.
